Western One Health Club has compiled a list of summer opportunities to make finding a research position or internship easier for our students at Western University. The list contains opportunities both in London and abroad.

 

*NOTE that the list of eligibility criteria we listed is by no means exhaustive. Listed criteria are the ones we deemed highly relevant. See the websites linked for each position for the full details.

Internship or Co-Op

Merck

Merck offers various internships for students over the summer with a wide variety of areas ranging from marketing to research and development in their pursuit of providing vaccines and medicines.

Student Employment

Health Canada

Various positions are available working to support Health Canada's initiatives

Description:

Eligibility*:

You must be a student continuing your education after the employment period.

Application opening/deadline date:

Application deadline is not listed. You must apply through the Public Services Commission of Canada

Student Work Experience Program

Canadian Food Inspection Agency

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency hires over 250 students a year for various different positions that are related to the student's academic background.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must be returning to study in the next academic year.

Application opening/deadline date:

You can apply through the Ongoing Student Recruitment Inventory which also has access to many other positions at Government Agencies. Additionally, some positions are posted individually on the same website.

Internship

Partners In Health

Various positions are available working with Partners In Health to support health systems in low income nations. Additionally, Partners In Health makes it a priority to incorporate the One Health approach into their interventions.

Description:

Eligibility*:

This will depend on the position that you choose to apply to however, you should be aware that many positions may require a minimum of 6 months commitment.

Application opening/deadline date:

Position applications open up and have deadlines throughout the year. Alternatively you can submit a general application which can be found at the bottom of the website linked below.

Internship

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Oak Ridge Institute)

Various positions are available that will allow students to work on initiatives led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Some positions require a Bachelors or Graduate degree while others are looking for Undergraduate students. Students must also obtain the correct visa, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will often sponsor successful international applicants.

Internship

World Vets

Work with World Vets to help with clinical activities involved in their Spay/Neuter clinics in Granada, Nicaragua.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Undergraduate and Veterinary Students can both be accepted to this program. The program costs around $1000 USD per month to participate in excluding living and travel expenses.

Application opening/deadline date:

Interns are selected throughout the year however, the program does not run from mid-May to mid-August.

International Veterinary Medicine (IVM) Program

World Vets

Gain exposure and clinical experience to Veterinary Medicine by working under veterinary technicians and instructors. You will also learn pre-operative and post-operative procedures.

Description:

Eligibility*:

The program costs around $1800 USD in addition to expenses that are not covered such as travel among others.

Application opening/deadline date:

Projects occur throughout the year with varying application deadlines.

Volunteer

Veterinarians Without Borders

Volunteer with Veterinarians Without Borders (VWB) to support their initiatives in supporting both animal and human health. The position is a volunteer role although most expenses are paid for by VWB. Various positions are offered ranging from Epidemiologist to Veterinary Advisor.

Must be a Canadian permanent resident or Canadian citizen. Other criteria exist for each position.

Internship

Doctors Without Borders (USA)

Various positions are available.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must obtain a work permit for the United States of America independently.

Application opening/deadline date:

There are three application cycles: Spring, Summer and Fall. The Spring application cycle closed at the end of December in the previous cycle. The Summer application cycle closed in the middle of April in the previous cycle. The Fall application cycle will close on August 9 in the current cycle (2019).

Internship

Doctors Without Borders (Canada)

Various positions are posted throughout the year.

Research Internship

Wilson Center

Work on a research project falling under one of many categories, one of which is One Health.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must be accepted to a graduate level program or be in a graduate level program.

Application opening/deadline date:

The deadline was March 15th in the previous application cycle.

Animal Behaviour Internship

Smithsonian National Zoo

Assist with ongoing research on rare and endangered species.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must have a certain coursework background. See website for more specific details.

Application opening/deadline date:

Applications are accepted year round

Internship

World Health Organization

Work with a technical unit of the WHO for a period of 6 to 24 weeks.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must hold a Bachelors Degree (possible 4th year opportunity) for positions in the Americas

Application opening/deadline date:

Position specific.

Internship

Child Family Health International (CFHI)

The program aims to expose students to global health. There are a variety of different programs available based on your interest and prior experience (for example your fluency in a certain language).

Description:

Eligibility*:

Internships have specific costs, however, you may be eligible for a scholarship.

Application opening/deadline date:

Opportunities are available year round.

Summer Research Program

SickKids

Conduct research under a scientist.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must be a non-graduate research student and contact specific scientists to inquire about applying to their lab.

Application opening/deadline date:

In previous application cycle, positions opened late December and closed late January.

Dean’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program

Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry

Conduct research under a Faculty member The type of work and project will depend on you and your supervisor.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must independently contact and convince an eligible Schulich Medicine & Dentistry supervisor to apply with you.

Application opening/deadline date:

In the previous application cycle, it opened mid January and closed mid February

Undergraduate Student Research Awards

NSERC

Conduct research under a Faculty member at one of many Canadian Universities.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must find a professor with an existing NSERC grant to sponsor your application.

Application opening/deadline date:

Each university sets it's own deadline. It tends to open in January and close in early February.

Volunteer positions

Research, Training and Field Work opportunity

EcoHealthNet

Conduct international research related to One Health under an assigned mentor. The specifics of the project will depend on the mentor.

They accept undergraduate students from any year. Each position has different criteria.

Application opening/deadline date:

Opened around early December in previous application cycle and closed at the end of December.

Undergraduate researcher

Stanford Medicine: Department of Comparative Medicine

You would have to email professors individually. This may be challenging as a Canadian student who does not attend the institution.

Fellowship

Global Health Corps

Many different positions are available for individuals from various academic backgrounds.

Description:

Eligibility*:

Must hold a Bachelors Degree (4th year opportunity). Each position has specific eligibility criterion.
